The Phoenix Children’s Hospital will be opening a $40 million expansion to its emergency department and Level 1 pediatric trauma center at its main campus in Phoenix on September 20th. The expansion will have more than doubled the trauma center and emergency department’s size, going from 18,600 square feet to 42,302 square feet.
Dr. Jared Muenzer, a Phoenix Children’s Hospital emergency-medical physician said the improvements will benefit everyone. Dr. Toni Gross said the expansion is designed to be two or even three times more efficient.
The old facility was meant to serve 22,000 patients a year while Phoenix Children’s Hospital has been caring for more than 84,000 patients a year. The new space can accommodate 100,000 patients by increasing private exam rooms to 75 and trauma bays to 9 total.
Phoenix Children’s Hospital is the only Level 1 pediatric trauma center in Arizona that is verified by the American College of Surgeons and one of the only ones in the country.
